I feel summer!
The hot temps are rising, the sun is stronger than ever and POOLS ARE OPEN for the season. Yeah! I love going to the pool in the summer and doing laps in an Olympic size pool. In case you did not know, an Olympic size pool has 50 meter lengths vs 25. At our pool we even have an Olympian that swims in the morning, which is quite exciting to know that I swim in the same lane as an athlete of that calibur. I love to watch John's graceful stroke and his clear demonstration of years of practice leading him to ease of sport. Anyhow, I did hit the pool yesterday to do my workout for TRI. It was tough for me yesterday. I have been swimming in a 25 meter pool all winter and spring, but only one day a week, alternating my workouts to run and weights. So while I was adding up the yards, it was one 25 at a time, and the 50 seemed a bit overwhelming to me yesterday. Even so, I did do 16 freestyle laps = 800 yards. I am in the process of re-training myself to swim more balanced which is side to side instead of only coming up to breathe on one side, the right side. This takes practice, and sticking to the right method as to not allow my body to take the path of least resistance, which is to do what I am comfortable with. For the most part I swam to improve my stroke, not for speed. Today I got a run in on the treadmill. Actually, warmed up for 5, proceeded with an incline walk taling up up to 10 and aback, followed by a 20 minute run totaling 3 miles and 400 calories burned. YES! Love the burn.
LESSON: Prepare your mind when you are about to switch up your activity, especially when it is one that is kinda tough for you. Bear in mind that environment and a different venue will create some anxiety, so do your best and keep pluggin along. Mom always said, "practice makes perfect."
Last week I wrapped up five workouts, one additional than scheduled. This week I've done 2 with 2 to go. Some changes in routine coming down the pike, and let you know more at the end of the week. In the meantime, I think I'll catch the Blackhawks on the tube for some fast paced puck action. GO HAWKS.
May the kefi be with you today,
The Roadrunner
