Tri Training in the Mediterranean

Hello from Loutraki, Corinth located about an hour  tri

outside of Athens in Greece.  Yes, I am vacationing with family and friends in this hot haven.  I have not written you about my TRI training in a few weeks because initially I had trouble getting onto the internet and then I could not size my images.  Anyhow, without boring you with all these unnecessary details, I'd like to bring you up to date on my training.  Well, first of all the different time zone, extreme heat and change of lifestyle makes it a bit challenging to train exactly the way I want to.  I've made modifications.

My Greek routine has been to stay up until 1 or 2am ( way tooooo late for me) and rise in the morning around 9....again tooooo late, and then begin my outdoor run.  The temps have been hovering at about 100 with high humidity, and really it would be better to run pre- 8am.
The week of July 12-16 I actually did well considering the schedule and HEAT....
Monday 7-12:   I went outside and walked over to the boardwalk set adjacent to the Mediterranean sea and I  ran for 40 minutes on pavement.  The warm-up and cool down were each 5 minutes.
Tuesday 7-13:   I completed a one hour brisk walk, did about 40 stairs, a few crunches and pull-ups at outdoor gym on the way...so FUN
Wednesday 7-14    I walked for 5 and ran for 43 minutes....extremely HOT!  I think about 100...still felt good after my workout.
Thursday 7-15:     I jogged for 40 minutes outdoors....I tried to do intervals but the heat was killing me, and I just couldn't get those going.
Friday:   My body felt really tired and dehydrated...but I jogged for 30 minutes walked for 25...sooooooo HOT.
Wed. and Thurs. I also incorporated some pm swimming in the sea, about 10 minutes each afternoon...was that ever refreshing!  I thought that I would be so afraid of doing fresh water swimming, but the salt actually keeps you UP...I have enjoyed the swimming.  Additionally, when we are near the ocean I jump in for however long I can and I swim.  LOVE THAT!!!!
I took Sat. and Sun. off from working out, and that was a good choice because we were traveling to my father's village and we got no sleep while there.  We maybe averaged 3 hours a night which contributed to my up-coming setback.
Upon returning to Loutraki Sunday evening I got about 7 hours of sleep but my body was feeling the exhaustion from lack of sleep and heat.  When I woke up Monday morning (7-18-10) I had a slight sore throat, but went for a 50 minute jog.  Later that day I swam out to the buoy, probably about 1/4 mile, and then back a 1/4 mile.  At lunch I had a beer, and this entire episode collapsed my immune system.  Tuesday I woke up with no voice and heavy chest congestion.  I spent Tuesday getting some medicine to relieve my discomfort, and hit the hey at 10pm last  night.  I woke up today, Wednesday feeling better, but still weak.  I feel so ticked off that my crazy schedule has me missing 2 days of workout, but my body needs much more rest and I'm listening.
LESSON:  Wherever you are and whatever you are doing take into consideration the climate, hydration of your body, and your schedule. DO NOT burn the candle at both ends, it will catch up to you. Better to pace, and listen to your body.  Even though you may be on vacation its wise to remain mindful of what your body can handle.
Today, I rest and I hope to feel up to working out tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. We take off for Athens to visit the new Acropolis museum on Saturday, sight see and come back Sunday night.
Good news is that each day a tremendous amount of walking is incorporated into our day, and that counts for a lot!
Have a super day, and catch up with you real soon!
Lotsa love and kefi...The Roadrunner  :))))
